review 1: Awesome book! After the tedium and torturous waiting throughout the last book, this book really was crazy good. So much transpired in the plot. So many key transformations within the characters and within their relationships to one another.Nikolai is brilliant...very evil...but brilliant. A master at mind control and manipulation, he handles Dougie and Mat with eerie efficiency. A lot of that power comes from his own self-assuredness that he cannot fail. Dougie is playing nicely into his hands, but I fear for Mat. Part of me doesn't want either of them to stop fighting, to give up hope. But the other part of me wants them to stop struggling with those who hold the power, so that they might be granted a reprieve from the constant onslaught of abuse and punishment. I know th... moreat is the very conflict that the brothers continue to struggle with, as they are slowly starting to realize that independent thought, inner strength and hope may just be the things that get them killed.
review 2: Doug, Mat, and Nikolai. What a disturbing group! We start with Nikolai bending Mat to his will with a little watersport. Then manipulating him into betraying his brother. Doug sees Mat for the first time in forever and is so thrilled and what follows with the "client" is so totally messed up I couldn't put the book down no matter how much I might want to. In the end the brotherhood bond is broken. How much more does Nikolai have in store for them and can Doug and Mat survive? less
