review 1: I enjoyed this book, it is the story of a girl now being told as an old woman, and her friendship with a family during her teen years and then later in the war. I have to say that even though I had guessed the ending it made me very angry with the characters and I thanked this had happened at the end of the book or otherwise I wouldn't have kept on reading. Anyway, it is well told and very interesting so I recommend it.
review 2: i enjoy a good WWII book, and this book definitely was a decent WWII book. The main character, Lucy, is trying to pick up where her Dad, Tom, left off in tracking down a long lost uncle. In Lucy's travels she is encouraged to talk to an elderly native named Beatrice. Where this story line lacks the most is with Lucy. I feel you
... moredo not get to know her well throughout the book. Lucy isn't major in the storyline. Beatrice and her past is the biggest story line. Beatrice has an interesting story to tell, bringing a decent historical fiction element in. Which is good, as it's the books only saving grace. The "twist" that comes about in the book is predictable. Overall, this book gets a 3 from me. If the story had incorporated Lucy better, and/or had a surprising twist, this book would have ranked higher for me. less
