review 1: It causes me great spiritual pain to give such a low rating to a book with a subplot about designing a handbag, but I just can't give the vaguely fashion themed POSEUR series the love I wish I could give it. The concept of four girls with different styles and different serious teen problems trying to work together to start a fashion label for an independent study at their ritzy school has so much potential, but everything is sunk by paper-thin characterizations that make it really difficult to muster up even half a goddamn about the romantic and family problems the girls face. Plus there's some pretty appalling classism, ageism, and some casual racism in the form of jokes about Hispanic maids with no last name because WHO CARES, THEY'RE JUST MAIDS! I guess it's pretty naiv... moree to not expect "ew, old people are gross and poorly dressed" content in a novel about rich teenage fashion designers but it still bothered me. The best thing about the POSEUR series continues to be Rachel Maude's delicate pencil illustrations, which makes me wonder if this overall concept would have been better suited as a series of graphic novels.
