review 1: Another beautifully written regency by Rachel Van Dyken for the House of Renwick series. This is a story of a man who is forced into marriage by his Aunt Agatha to the woman who as a child tormented him. The journey is witty and fun as these two find their way and are faced with some adversity. The ton is watching as they attempt to behave but it seems fate is forcing them together despite how the think they feel about one another. Beendict - is a rake of the first order and devilishly handsome, as well as the devil ;-) He has sworn off marriage and taken to entertaining himself with gambling and mistresses; until his dear Aunt Agatha steps in and tells him his days of fun and folly are over. Agatha - is the pain it the butt Aunt who knows exactly what you need and will ma... moreke you realize it come h#ll or highwater!Loved her firey spirit and take no crap personality ;-)Katherine - is a hoot! She is a lady trying her hardest to be everything that is expected of her as she reaches the brink of spinster-hood. She is beautiful but holding out for the man she has crushed on since childhood, but he is engaged and in love. When the a prediciment as a social event forces her hand she is forced to push on with a man she loathes.
review 2: Lady Katherine Bourne is a candidate for spinsterhood who has a tendency to be inelegant, bumbling at times, and not a typical woman of her class. Benedict’s aunt Agatha mentions to her that his cousin will be at a ball, who she thinks is the one she should marry. However, a compromising situation that has her tripping onto Benedict and flashing her ankles to the ballroom has a betrothal decided for them. She wants to marry his cousin, not him with his scandalous reputation - right?Benedict Devlyn, Duke of Banbury, has been told that he has to marry for the good of the family name. His irascible, manipulating aunt suggests Katharine, but then says she might be too good for him. By his count she has tried to kill him thrice though! He rather likes his rakish ways; he says he does not like her, but her telling him no has him re-thinking his stance on them both. He just has to convince her that they belong together.They are both adamant that they do not like one another, hiding it behind animosity towards each other. Her denying him leads him to re-think that animosity and what it is covering. She seems to be the only one who can make him laugh or smile, causing him to start mending his scandalous behavior. Despite their issues love starts to grow between them. There is just the issue of his house keeper leaving. Maybe his Aunt had a good idea after all.This was a whimsical, light-hearted story that was quick, easy, and a joy to read. It was not exactly stringent to historical detail; there is enough to set the scene with a touch of the modern added to it that makes it something anyone can relate to. The romance seems to be quick, but it looked like it was there already. It was entertaining to read them admitting to it and getting there.
