review 1: Maddy and Ben love each other, but their lives are marred not by physical violence but by Ben's anger, moods and extreme reactions to often minor mishaps at home. She tries to smoothe things over but she and her children live in constant fear of Ben's rage, until one day one of hismeltdowns results in Maddy being badly hurt in an accident. He is at last forced to begin the process of confronting and dealing with his issues, but is he too late? Not sensational but very thoughtful, the story deals with realistic but flawed people and offers no easy answers, although it ends with a note of hope. There are no villains or heroes here, but people struggling with their own pressures, problems and their own past and upbringing. The children are well drawn too, particularly Maddy a... morend Ben's teenage daughter, who has to take on the burden of running the home at a time when she is also dealing with boyfriend issues, worry about her mother and rumours about the accident. A good, thought-provoing read.
review 2: I think this book would have been better if we had seen more of the protagonists' lives before the main event that shapes the book. I found it hard to empathize with even the characters who were clearly supposed to be more "likeable." In fact, I found myself feeling annoyed with most of the main characters throughout the book. Lesser characters were not well- enough fleshed out, and I found myself mixing some of them up. Not a fun read, but it's not supposed to be. Does make an important point about how a bad temper can equal emotional abuse in a marriage, even if it never reaches the level of physical violence by one spouse toward the other. less
