review 1: This was a good book. I borrowed it from my sister; she had received it as a birthday present. The book starts off with the statistics of the modern day church, how many fall away who were raised in the faith and how 80-90% of those who convert to Christianity at some point in their lives will also not stick with their decision. This book deals with the modern day way of preaching, the "wonderful life" message. In essence, this message is that, "You have a God-shaped hole in your life that you have been trying to fill with things of the world. However, if you want to reach true happiness and peace and have a great life you need to accept Jesus because he loved you and died for you. He has a wonderful plan for your life." This modern day message has been the core reason why... more people fall away from the faith. The book stresses the importance of using the law, the Ten Commandments, for conversion. Because you cannot preach the message of grace without having someone realize that they are a sinner and in danger of hellfire. By going through the Commandments, and being convicted of their sins, a person is more likely to accept the message of Christ and follow him. The Bible never says that accepting God is a way to get a perfect life, indeed it says quite the opposite. By taking up the cross, you open up your life for persecution and trials. Your life will not be fixed magically by becoming a Christian. It may in fact be quite worse than it was prior to your conversion. But we must accept the trials of this life because we are looking to where our eternal home will be, whether we will spend our days in Heaven or Hell. A large concept of this book is false conversion, in that a large majority of Christians are not true Christians but have been falsely converted. It is a scary thought to think that many who are in the church are not truly saved. But, this book reveals a Biblical way of preaching, the way Jesus did to prevent such false conversion. I did enjoy this book and even though I felt some elements of it were repetitive it is a book I would recommend for any Christian to read. It would be a good book to supplement Comfort's other book, "The Way of the Master."
review 2: This book exposes the shallowness of today's Christianity, and shows how unrealistic and contradictory it is to "catch souls" by telling them they'll lead a wonderful life if only they "accept Christ." It misrepresents the Bible, painting it as some sort of motivational success book, and it just plain doesn't work.Ray Comfort speaks of the disillusionment of hundreds of thousands of converts to Christianity as they find that their problems DON'T disappear, they DON'T find the missing piece, and they DON'T experience true happiness. Of course they leave the church. Of course they lose all interest in the Gospel. These people were told, before they had any notion of their own moral responsibility, that God loves them and has a wonderful plan for their life. less
