review 1: I loved the first book, and like any sequel you worry that it won't be as good, however, Ray Gorham did just as well on this book as the first one! I love that you are introduced to new characters and you are able to learn more about the characters that we already know. This book shows you that community and friends means more then anything in a world where the norm is long gone. I love that we see doomsdays preppers in this book and that one should maybe thinks about a life after civilization has gone out the window. I can honestly say I hope that there is a third book in this series!!!
review 2: I received this book courtesy of Net Galley for an honest review.3.5I enjoyed this book overall, but there were a few gaps in the storyline. I absolutely love the
... more way the author writes. His books have a conversational tone and an ease to reading his books. He makes the characters and situations realistic without over the top scenarios. The pace of this novel is a little slower with Kyle being reunited with his family and are settling in the community of Deer River. They are trying to find security and hope they will survive in this community. They are challenged at times from the outside conflicts along with their own struggles with their current situations that are beyond their control. It was interesting to see how the community handled the rape and death of someone in their community. The trial drama weighed down the story line a bit and I felt that it could’ve been tightened up more. The twist of banishment added a little excitement to the storyline. I love that they brought Rose back in the second book and would’ve like to see her interact with Kyle a bit more rather than in the passive role she did. I hope she continues on in the next book and that the author will perhaps add a bit more of a dynamic storyline for her. I thought the ending was a bit mixed. At first, I thought the book was going to end on an upswing; instead it added a dimension of fear of the unknown and was open ended. I’ve enjoyed the two books so far and will continue to follow the series. less
