review 1: Very clever satire of modern English life (although probably translates well to upper-crust Americans as well). Not really a mystery, since the reader knows all; and as a "non-mystery," it is another example of Ms. Rendell pushing the envelope of the mystery genre. Although if anyone else had written it, I would be more likely to simply call it a social comedy with some dead people. Hope the BBC picks this one up soon. I think it would make a great miniseries!
review 2: I usually devour Ruth Rendell books and love every minute but this one didn't quite hit the spot for me. There were way too many characters to keep track of and my head started to swim. I liked Dex (liked being an odd word as he is as mad as a halibut!) but he was a very typical loopy Rendel
... morel character around whom much of the mayhem revolves. This tale simply didn't hang together as well as many of her other books which I have found superb studies in hideous characters. I like her darkness but because this book had too many characters we never really got down to the depths of who these people were and what motivated them. To my mind other books of hers such as 'Going Wrong' are far superior. That said, a mediocre book by such a superb exponent of the writing craft as Ruth Rendell is still way above many other authors. Even at her not very best, I'm still happy to spend a day of my life reading one of her books! less
