Title: ENDLESS KNIGHT
Author: KRESLEY COLE
Series: THE ARCANA CHRONICLES #2
Publication Date: 2/09/2014
Publisher: SIMON & SCHUSTER
Rating: 4.5/5

[SPOILER WARNING]

The story picks up directly where Poison Princess left off. Evie completing her first kill by taking out Arthur (The Hermit) with Jack, Selena, Matthew and Finn to witness her in all her Red Witch/Empress glory. Evie’s top priority has always been to find her grandmother, but things get so complicated with the militia, bagmen, slavers, cannibals and other Arcana that stand in her way.

In this book, we finally met other new Arcana characters such as Tess (The World), Joules (The Tower), Gabriel (Judgment), Guthrie (The Heirophant), Vincent & Violet (The Lovers), Lark (Strength) and Ogen (The Devil). It started with Evie and the rest to find and recruit other Arcana just because Evie wants to end Death and also she needs help to end the game.

This is where we finally seen that Evie has grown so much from the previous book. She finally has full control of her Empress side. She become more powerful in this book. She’s not afraid of her Empress side anymore which is a good thing. She clearly is a girl who may not need Jack to survive like before but who still very much wants him by her side.

There’s a lot of ups and downs with Evie’s character in this book. She does love Jack so much, but her heart split into two when Death came into the story. I’ll talk about Death later.

Now let’s talk about Jack. At first when he witnessed what Evie really are, he obviously confused, but at the end he understand everything that’s going on even though he’s a non-Arcana as Matthew said before. He confronted Evie and told her that he loves her forever no matter what and he did promised Evie that he’ll help her find her grandmother and will rebuild the world again. And when he promise, he always stick to his words.

There’s so much more about him that we finally get to know in this book. This book showed a lot of his different side since Evie didn’t need his protection anymore. He step up his role as a leader this time. When we finally get to see a development in his character, Death came into the picture. This is where a huge mess began.

We finally get to know Death and meet him in this one. It gets too irritating when Evie and Jack always had their moment together, Death always stand in their way. He is a new guy who rival Evie’s love for Jack, I’m so annoyed by this love triangle thing actually. But it is still a fun book to read.

Death allied with Ogen and Lark, they ambushed Evie and her friends and he straight up kidnapped her and brought her to his castle. He tricked Evie into thinking that the rest of her friends are dead. Evie went mad at first for believing him. But when she knew the truth and knew that her friends including her boyfriend Jack survived, she wanted to escape but failed due to high protection in the castle.

She’s been kidnapped for months and then she decided to trick Death into letting her escape. Death is obviously not easy to trick. As the months goes by she finally got Death to revealed his actual name and his name is….Aric. Yes he’s a good looking guy just like Jackson but Evie’s character start to go down from the moment she kissed Aric.

I mean, he spent the whole decades hating her and trying to end her life but she fell for him so easily? Like what? Okay, but this is where I feel like the messy things started. Aric (Death) has won in previous decades and gained immortality by winning the game. He killed the rest of the Arcana to win the game and that includes the Empress. Yes his character has been portrayed as the strongest and the powerful one.

Since Evie is the ONLY girl he can touch, he tried so hard not to fell for her because of what the past Empresses did to him was awful. Evie finally learned a bit more about Aric and about her past incarnation history with him. The past Empresses was Aric’s wives. He can only married to The Empress just because she’s the one who survived his touch. He has a deadly touch, whoever touch him will die straight away except for the Empress.

To be clear, Evie is NOT Aric’s wife, even though she’s the Empress in the present time but she’s not actually his wife. That was the Empresses in past decades that became his wives. Aric did fell for Evie in the end and they did spent a lot of time with each other in his castle but weird thing is that Aric never called Evie by her name he always called her “Empress” or “creature” which is really creepy.

I did missed the Evie and Jack moments in this book, because this book gave a lot of space to Aric’s character and showed why he’s so important to the storyline and what his connection to Evie really are. Most of the chapters just focused on Evie + Aric, but also other important things been brought up such as the inactive arcana card and the minor arcana cards.

The Minor Arcana are not as strong and powerful as the Major Arcana, this chronicles is actually about the Major Arcana so the role of the Minor Arcana in the whole storyline are pretty much minor.

The ending of this book really ended with a cliffhanger. That also happened on the first book. Jack got kidnapped and was held captive by The Lovers and Evie asked Aric for helped but with one condition from Aric and the condition is….yes that’s the cliffhanger I’m talking about.

Endless Knight has an unrelenting, non-stop pace so full of action (in the beginning and the middle only) and drama that I literally could not stop reading. Kresley is a pure genius. The Arcana world she has created is brilliant, so well thought out, so detailed and life like. Each of the characters are so unique and some are well-developed and truthfully downright awesome.
