Review:
I’ve decided to read something other than romance and/or erotica! How shocking!
Amazon have launched Prime Reading where Prime users can read for free so my fiancé let me jump on his account to grab some books and this is the first one I decided to read.
Also, I apologise if this review isn’t up to scratch, I’ve not been reviewing lately so I might be a little rusty.
The book itself was fairly short and it only took me two days once I’d finally got back into the habit of reading again. However, I was torn on how to rate this before I decided to go with four stars. My reasoning for this is that three just seemed too low and while the book had a few faults I would like to read the sequel to find out what happens.
I think my main problem was Emily herself who earned my displeasure on page three when she called a receptionist a “bitch”. Sure, it’s a minor nitpick but when later paired with a line about Justine, Emily’s boss, it just reminded me why I hate reading female characters written by male authors.
The line I mentioned above:
“She had managed to keep her femininity intact while still commanding the respect of both her male and female staff.”
I’m not sure why femininity and respect are seen as two things that you can’t have together?
Also, Emily just seemed to fall asleep at the drop of a hat, which seemed rather impractical and dangerous when she fell asleep in the middle of a shop!
However, despite my complaints I actually did like the book. Sure, it probably won’t be my Book of the Year but it’s not going to be my most hated one either.
I enjoyed that it was an Apocalypse story with no frigging zombies! It’s so rare for that to happen these days that I was genuinely surprised as I kept expecting one to pop up somewhere. Yes, even after it was obvious that it was aliens!
I do wish we’d found out just what was in the red rain and what the aliens actually wanted but I’m guessing that will (hopefully) be in the next book. I’ll probably pick that up at some point but I’m forcing myself to read the books I’ve already got before buying any more.
So maybe I’ll read book two at some point in 2018?
