A Lesson in Irony

A personal twist on Orwell’s rules for writing:

  • Every rose has its thorn, and the thorn of writing is cliche metaphors and figures of speech. Avoid them like the plague.
  • Never use an interminable word where a lilliputian word will be suffice.
  • If it is ever possible under any and every circumstances to cut, or delete, or remove a word, always cut, or delete, or remove that word where ever possible for you to do so.
  • The active voice should be used by you.
  • Your modus operandi must always be to avoid foreign phrases and scientific jargon. That’s not just my hypothesis. Go ahead and ignore it, Qui vivra verra…
  • Break any of these rules and you deserve to die. Under no circumstances should you ever break these rules lest you end up the most pathetic moron of your generation.
