Born with a mother she feared who soon disappeared from her life and a absent father submersed in mysterious job Sofia Claremont is left in the care of the Hudsons- friends with Sofia’s parents. The only reason they agreed to take her in is the hefty pay check Sofia’s father gives them monthly.  Their son however is Sofia’s anchor getting her through life’s challenges.

One of the most powerful lines in this book that is repeated multiple times is first said from Ben during their school’s football game as Sofia is having a panic attack, “I know an excuse when I hear one. Don’t you dare deceive yourself into believing that you’re the victim, Sofia Claremont.” It’s one of the most powerful lines in the book.

That line is used again shortly after Sofia is kidnapped while on vacation on her birthday and taken to a deadly island known as The Shade.  The crazy realization that vampires and the supernatural exist when she is kidnapped by one. They place her in the possession of the notorious vampire prince, Derek Novak. He’s breaths away from killing Sofia but stops after she struggles to gasp out those words that were once spoken to her.

What happens then is something you’ll have to discover yourself. So much happens making it a favorite read of mine. Though it has a few errors, it’s still a wonderful read.
It’s the biggest fight for her life. I like how she battles real life issues like panic attacks and a social disorder  that can be relevant to the reader. It’s rare to have a character like Sofia.  You don’t have to be perfect to be a great character and that’s what I like so much about her. Though she is terrified she pushes through it by being as strong as she can manage and makes those around her accountable for their actions like Derek.

Derek Novak has a lot of history and emotional baggage to sort through. Hundreds of years of baggage.  He runs away from his problems by literally sleeping them off for four hundred years until he has no choice but to face them head on. He’s one of the most powerful and feared leaders of his kind and yet there is Sofia who will challenge his authority.

I’m really impressed that the author is self published and has sold more than 6 million copies. That’s insane! That right there should tell you how talented she is. She spits out a new book every month.

What others are saying:

It’s not like most cheesy vampire novels go. There are those comparing it to Twilight and also comparing Sofia and Derek to Bella and Edward. To me, it’s nothing like that and the characters are unique and not to be compared to the cheesy saga and it’s dense characters. No offense Stephanie Meyer.

Audio Available:

You must get the audio version this. The characters on the trailer and promotional pictures are the voice actors for this book. SO great, and they make feel like you are in the story! I haven’t experienced an audio book quite like this before. Bella Forrest really took it to the next level .

Overall I thought this is a very fast paced story that jumps right into a suspenseful crazy world. I read it in only two nights. I did find a few grammatical errors but ones that aren’t easy to spot and could easily be missed in the editing process.

Although it’s listed as teen fantasy I recommend reading it first before giving it to your teen reader. There are a few scenes in the book that you may be uncomfortable with them reading. Nothing crazy inappropriate happens but there are some close calls when Sofia is attacked.
If you’ve read or do read this crazy book let me know what you think!
