review 1: I kept chuckling as I read this book, and my daughter asked me to read her the bits that made me laugh out loud. She's now a Johannes Cabal fan without having read the books. I was worried that the Dreamlands were going to be super annoying with airy-fairy wandering about in mist, etc., but I should have known that Johannes would never countenance such frivolity. There were some truly creepy moments in this book, and even some pathos. When we see Cabal at his possible worst, I feel like we're seeing what he fears himself he will eventually become. I came away from this book feeling like I know him better than ever. I like him against my will, and I'm proud of him against my will. It's the strangest thing, and I'm grateful to experience these books.I'm also grateful I alrea... moredy have the 4th book, because otherwise I'd be ready to climb the walls!
review 2: I love the wit and bizarre humor in all of Jonathan L. Howard's books. The way he makes Johann Cabal the most vile while loveable protagonist is a real art. As much as I enjoyed the quirky humor in The Fear Institute, I have to admit that I didn't understand the ending. I won't spoil it by saying how it ended, but if there is anybody out there who would explain to me what I'm missing at the end, I would sure appreciate it. Other than my confusion, I liked the book. less
