Hello Readers,
My name is Savanna Culver. I am 17 years old and I am a senior in high school. This year I was given the chance to do an independent study type of project in my psychology class. I am able to choose any psychological topic I would like and I have to research and come up with a nice final project. For part of my final project I decided to do weekly blog posts. I chose a blog as part of my project because that way other people are able to read the things I have discovered. I’m hoping that others will be able to use my information to help themselves and maybe help others by understanding the things going on in their head. Depending on my schedule each week I will post between 2 and 3 times weekly. I will post about the things I have discovered along the way through research. I will also include some of the things I personally have witnessed and other peoples viewings on the subject. The subject I have chosen is Depression among our youth.
According to the Vermont Youth Risky Behavior survey taken in 2015, 24% out of 21,013 high school students felt so sad or hopeless every day for at least two weeks within the 12 months prior. This resulted in that 24% of the students losing interest in some things they were previously interested in doing. In 2013 the percent of students who had experienced this sadness and hopelessness went up by 3%.
Depression Question Results DemographicI am curious as to why depression is so common in our youth. I am also curious as to why more females experience depression than males. I’m hoping to uncover some of the reasoning behind these things as I go on with my research. I will be using a variety of resources to uncover my findings such as websites, podcasts, documentaries, peer feedback, and interviews with professionals.
Thank you for taking the time to read my first blog post. I hope you enjoy my findings.
