AWRW Book Blog Presents 31 Days of Halloween Reads Featuring Something Taken the book series, by Author @JerrieBrock #31DaysofHalloweenReads #IARTG

Welcome to 31 Days of Halloween Reads, where A Well Read Woman Blog will be presenting horror and dark fiction novels, book reviews, interviews, guest posts, and more with dark fiction and horror authors, daily!

Today’s featured book series is the Something Taken series, by Author Jerrie Brock! I also featured this Author earlier this month, with an Author interview, which you can check out here!

Jerrie shares her spacious yard with a herd of stray mutts, neurotic cats who discovered a ready food source, a pot-bellied pig pawned off by the original owner who decided Piglet didn’t fit in a condo, and various other critters who recognized a soft touch. In spite of too many distractions and projects, Jerrie’s first passion remains writing. Drawing on her vaired experiences, she enjoys creating fiction from reality and hopes it contributes to the food fund for the crazy clan she continues to acquire.

Jerrie Brock writes a variety of genres, but it is her controversial contemporaries that we’re focusing on today.

In her own words:

“Fictional Non-Fiction, because life has always been filled with the frightful, the incredible and the wonderful.”

Her novels Something Taken and Something Returned stirred up all sorts of emotions in me. It’s a series I enjoyed greatly, and if your looking for a dark read that deals with heavy subjects, (such as drug abuse, homelessness, rape, and corrupt police), both novels are highly recommended by yours truly!

Something Taken

Terry Roche is determined to make it on her own.  The challenge is fun, until the night she is pulled over by the Denver Police.  When the officer uses his authority to make Terry submit to his desires,  her life takes a disastrous turn. With only a little pup to share her fears and humiliation, everything begins unraveling until it reaches a deadly climax.

Something Taken, by Jerrie Brock brought out a lot of emotions in me. I experienced disgust, anger, fear, and eventually happiness and hope. At times this book isn’t easy to read, but once you reach the end you will find the light at the end of the tunnel.

I enjoyed this story, specifically Terry’s perspective of events. There has never been a protagonist who I have wanted to hug more than Terry. She is young, weak, and troubled, yet wise beyond her years. I cried along with her and always wished for the best for her to get back on the right track.

Something Returned

When Melissa McCurdy receives the note in the mail, the beautiful life she has built comes crashing down. Married for 25 years with two grown children, she has no idea how to break the news to them. This is not just a little surprise, her revelation is of nearly 30 years of deception.  Melissa McCurdy aka Terry Roche must somehow find a way to break the news, and face a crime she has little memory of.

But I know a person died in my presence and there’s a very real possibility I killed him.”

In the follow up story to Something Taken, Melissa McCurdy, aka Terry Roche, receives a disturbing note in the mail telling her that they have reopened a nearly 30 year old cold case involving a crime she was involved with. Melissa doesn’t know what is worse, possibly going to prison for the rest of her life, or telling her husband of nearly 25 years, and children who she REALLY is.

Melissa is a testament to the power of love, and forgiveness. Her errors of the past have been compensated with wisdom and grace. I would recommend this story to anyone who was interested in a contemporary crime story, with a strong theme of romance
