This was my second reading of Batman: Hush by Jeph Loeb, Jim Lee and Scott Williams. I felt I owed it to myself to read it again after reading Batman: The Long Halloween and giving it a lackluster review. I had read Hush long before Halloween, even though it was actually published later. Unfortunately for the earlier comic series, it kinda paled in comparison to this one, which I loved. Both times.
I’m through comparing the two Jeph Loeb works. Just let me tell you what makes Hush such a great Batman epic. As easy as 1, 2, 3…
The Central Mystery: which is essential to any story featuring the World’s Greatest Detective. This mystery involves a character we come to know as Hush, and begins with Batman placed in mortal danger after an accident.
Guest Stars: no epic saga is complete without of roster of guest stars, friends and foes. This one has a lot, including but not limited to, Catwoman, Killer Croc, Nightwing, Huntress, Robin, Joker, Riddler, Harley Quinn, Jim Gordon, the Riddler, Harvey Dent, Clayface…the list continues. There’s also a couple of surprise guest stars, who may or may not be who they seem to be. Plus, there’s lots of fighting.
The Artwork: when story and artwork mesh perfectly, you really can’t go wrong. The team of Jim Lee (pencils) and Scott Williams (inks) is one I’ve admired for nearly a couple decades now. I was there for X-Men and for WildC.A.T.S, and now here. For my tastes, the Lee/Williams combo is rarely equalled, let alone surpassed. This was a beautifully rendered book. The artwork alone would have elevated a subpar story. Fortunately, this story was also engaging and entertaining.
I’m not going to give away any of the secrets of this one. This is a book that you need to read. I would love to see this one adapted for a motion picture. Or, if that’s not in the cards, an animated feature. This is a good one, guys. It’s an A+, all the way.
