Almost daily, I have a conversation with someone who is in the market for work. Either they are unemployed and are having trouble finding the right job (or any job), or they are not satisfied with the place they are currently employed with. It is difficult to find that place that is a perfect fit for you as you attempt to balance work life with home life. People often end up feeling trapped in their jobs because they simply do not feel like there is anything else they can do. It is better to have a job that they hate then no job at all.
To a degree, this is true. If a person does not make themselves marketable, it can be very difficult to find work outside of what they are already doing. Because of this, it is important for an individual to continue to work on their education and skillsets as they navigate through life so that they maintain that marketability that is necessary for today’s society.
Marcus Buckingham states that “change is constant and certain. We may flatter ourselves into thinking that we feel the pressure of change more keenly than our ancestors did, but it seems especially easy to notice flux and uncertainty in our time. Technology has made the world a smaller place – people and companies are intimately interconnected. Economic bubbles and recessions have left corporations and communities repeatedly having to adjust to new realities. Jobs are more variable and skills more quickly obsolete than ever before. Organizations are hiring less, for less, replacing humans with technology and outsourcing or offshoring jobs whenever they can”.
What can you do about this?
How can you put yourself in a position to always be at the top of a hiring list?
Here are a couple of thoughts.
Find a way to make some extra cash on the side so that you are not nearly as reliant upon your employer for your wellbeing. Now, I’m not saying to quit your job or anything. However, if you feel like the job you have is not for you and are having trouble transitioning to something else, maybe creating a little side hustle is a decent enough bridge to get you from point A to point B. Learning to create a better financial situation for your family by maintaining smart money practices will benefit you greatly.
Beyond that, increase your education. It cannot be stated frequently enough how important an education is in increasing your marketability. Do you want to move on beyond what you are currently doing in life? Make yourself more employable by increasing your knowledge base.
And lastly, change the way you think about yourslf. The greatest limitation that will be placed on your growth will most likely be put there by yourself. When you say, “I can’t do it” then you most likely will not. Change your thought patterns so that you constantly think that you can accomplish what is in front of you and you will see doors open immediately.
Life is Strange. Live it Well.
