I saw, well… I am pretty sure we all have seen, the un-photoshopped photos of Kim Kardashian on her recent trip to Mexico. We ultimately learned that her body is definitely not what we see on the covers of magazines; Kim K has flaws like all of us!
Thanks to these pictures, the internet has been body shaming her pretty badly. People are saying some pretty harsh things about her appearance. For example, Barstool Sports is a popular sports and men’s lifestyle blog, which had a comment that said, “Umm gross dude. Listen I’m a huge ass guy. Love ass. This ass sucks. Way too big. Way to cottage cheesy. Can’t have it. Can’t win with an ass like this. Chick needs to hit Soul Cycle or something. Clean it up.”
What are we telling girls with these kind of comments? That if we don’t have a tight round butt, then we are gross? This is so not right.
Social Media was full of ugly tweets regarding Kim’s untouched photos. The feedback shows us exactly where our society stands when it comes to body shaming. Photo via DailyMail. Many people are arguing that Kim ‘deserves’ this body shaming since she has made us all believe that having a perfect body is possible. But hey people, this is not only about Kim Kardashian. The majority of celebrities photoshop their pictures, even Beyoncé. We are so used to see flawless models that if we see them without anything to cover or fix them, we go crazy. Girls nowadays use apps like Facetune to fix their imperfections. This app sells itself by saying “Facetune helps you look your Hollywood best, even in photos taken on mobile phones.” Media taught us that if Kate Hudson needs to be photoshopped, then I must need it too!
Girls are trying to reach an impossible false perception of a perfect body. Media and fashion keep telling us that being skinny, without zits or any stretch mark in our legs is what it’s beautiful. Dolce & Gabbana, just launched a new pair of sneakers with a message doodled across the shoe, “I’m thin and gorgeous.” Why would they display messages like this if they are a huge brand which has customers of all sizes?
Media today has a huge influence on teenagers, be it television, computers, video games, or social media. If they keep showing perfect people, that is what we are going to strive for. We need more brands that show real women with real bodies, like Aerie, Dove, Lane Bryant, Target and Nike. Because this is how we really look. We want to see more ads and magazine covers with women with the same flaws as us. I am tired of seeing headlines talking about how Chrissy Teigen uploaded a picture to Instagram where her stretch marks are showing. Why is this article relevant? Really, we can do better than that.
Don’t be ashamed of your body, embrace it! Now you know that even people like Kim Kardashian have the same “problems” we all do. It is part of our nature, so just remember to love every little detail about yourself.
