Book review: Martin’s Dream Day, by Kitty Kelley, photographs by Stanley Tretick

Kelley, Kitty. Martin’s Dream Day. Photographs by Stanley Tretick. Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2017. Unp. $17.99. ISBN: 978-1-4814-6766-7. Gr. ALL. P8 Q9

I read this book and had to share it with a teacher at my school. His idol is Martin Luther King Jr. He just returned the book yesterday after having it for over two months. Kitty Kelley has written other biographies but this is the first aimed at a younger audience. She drew on her friend, the late Stanley Tretick’s photographs to show a realistic account of the day that Martin gave his “I have a dream” speech. One of my favorites was a faded black and white picture of the crowds which met in Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963 and is overlaid by part of the text.

Verdict: This book should be in all school library collections. Today is the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s assassination and I shared the book with the students in my classes. They were visibly moved by the story and loved seeing the pictures of this time and event. The photographs are outstanding and give so much historical context to the reader of a time long gone.
