Save Me is a quick, great read for fans of clean romance with a little dash of witchcraft and subtle hints of stalkerish tendencies. Diverse characters and a well thought out plot keep you intrigued, but leave you with wanting more.
The novel starts out with Cara going to the Liberty Charters to whale watch. She is even a volunteer she loves it so much. Except this little voyage is different from her other ones. Besides the captain there is one other person on this tour with her, the introduction of one of the next main characters in the story, David.
The attraction is very immediate between the two of them and is described to something similar to a warm tether that connects the two together. Even though Cara has sworn off boys after a previous relationship gone bad, she finds that she can’t let David go. When an innocent tour to watch some greys a transient whale rocks the boat sending Cara overboard. And David, the knight in shining armor that he is jumps into the frigid waters to save her.
From that shared moment on they seem to be infactuated with each. Everything Cara thinks about forward is where is David and when is she going to see him again. And after one date she’s head over heels for him…but her world as well as David’s come crashing down. I’m a no spoiler person, so after a certain event the two just can’t be together because she’s a high school student and he is…significantly older than her…and her…
The following time she at the docks she hopes to see David again, but instead meets another newcomer to town, Garren. The relationship between Cara and Garren is weird and keeps you guessing who is really is. He knows things about Cara that she never told him and he always seems to be there, plus he has this weird need to get her to help her best friend out.
Cara’s bestie Rachel is the typical hormone driven teenager that wants to find a boyfriend. And after Garren doesn’t hit it off with her she goes to a boy named Ethan. And after several conversations between Cara and Garren we learn that Ethan is mixed up with the wrong people. No surprise that not that long after Rachel becomes detached and only cares about Ethan. She refuses to talk to Cara and despise Garren, but why?
Tension between the girls get thick and the weirdness between Cara and Garren gets darker. Like talk of witchcraft, demons, and exorcisms…which is preformed on Rachel. The attraction between Cara and David is forced apart, but neither of them can stay away from each other even when a vengeful date becomes his stalker by default. David wanted to get his mind off of Cara so he went on a harmless date. Turns out that his date has a hateful past with Cara and now David gets swept up in her payback.
It was very very clean romance. And if you are looking for a great paranormal romance this may not be it considering the paranormal is a subplot and those paranormal aspects of the story were very glossed over and rarely talked about past the point of such and such is doing spells and so on. People denied that use of witchcraft, but then accepted it so easily. I also expected the grays that Cara loves so much to have more hidden meaning, but they’re just whales that ultimately help Garren reveal who he is.
Hurt feelings and prying demons, archbishops and blessings, soul mates and guardian angels, Save Me has a little of everything. The character development is good for a standalone novel. You learn enough about each character to visualize all their different personalities. Back stories are connected with the present.
