review 1: I found this novel deeply absorbing and beautifully written. Richell portrays a very vivid picture without being too disruptive to the plot. And what a plot it is! The Tides are a family with many problems and many secrets. Following a tragic accident one summer's day - and I won't say what it is with its risk of spoilers - the family is devastated and struggles to overcome its feelings of guilt. How it does so over a period of a decade is clever without being contrived. If I have one criticism, it is the constant flashbacks to a previous time which I found difficult to cope with. But, still, it is a worthy debut novel.
review 2: If you like Kate Morton's work, read this book! In a nutshell, it explains how one tragedy can have a devastating impact on a family.
... more Our immediate family members are the most important people in our lives, yet this book dives into the other side of that truth: what happens when the people who are supposed to be your closest loved ones shut themselves off from you, leaving you to fend for yourself. less
