review 1: Nothing new, nothing imaginative; I knew how it would end about half way through. I think this plot has been way overdone. But...the absolute worst was that I listened to it. I have not listened to a narrator that irritated me more. She clipped words and sentences oddly and she took pauses at irregular times. I disliked her narration and would never listen to another book narrated by her ever again. Even if I had read this, which I wish I had, I wouldn't give it a higher rating. It lacked originality in any form and if I hadn't disliked the narrator so much to keep me on edge, I would have been bored. Of the been there, done that a million and two times genre.
review 2: The Vanishing is a perfect horror-suspense story for October reading. The plot master
... morefully led me into a false sense of knowing where it was headed, a sense of security even, and then it fooled me....and then it fooled me again! I wish more books could accomplish that wonderful moment of surprise. Moreover, the author played scrupulously fair. I can look back and see all the tell-tale signs. Deliciously creepy gothic horror at its best. less

A good, easy read for the season. It's no Haunting of Hillhouse, but still fun.
