“She was a princess, elegant, refined, and all that the position implied. At least, that was she kept telling herself. Because, truth be told, she hated being stuck in this cage, playing this game.”
Cage of Deceit is the first book in the Reign of Secrets series by Jennifer Anne Davis.
Sixteen-year-old Allyssa, the heir to the Emperion throne acts elegant and refined in public but regularly sneaks out under a secret persona – that of a vigilante.
With war on the horizon she must do what ever necessary to protect her people – including forming an alliance through marriage.
The prince that appears on her doorstep is not what she was expecting and his nosy squire, Jarvick, is watching her every move.
Jarvik and Allyssa are forced to work together to unveil a larger plot and try to stop the brewing war.
Okay so first off raise your hand if the spelling of ‘Allyssa’s’ name annoys you? *raises hand*. Yes I realise that’s super nitpicky but it bugged me the whole book (maybe because I have friends called that name that spell it as Alyssa).
Anyway, now that’s out of the way this book was interesting and did have potential. I have gone on to read the next books (I’m currently reading the third) and I was actually surprised by the plot (which was definitely not the case in this book). The concept is interesting and while I found both Allyssa and Jarvik annoying at times overall the series has been pretty good so far.
Not too much I can say without spoiling the book but don’t worry if you work out the ending early on – I did and still enjoyed it regardless. This book is a great light read (I’ve been coming across a lot of these lately) and worth a look if you enjoy a bit of drama.
Thanks for reading!

PS – sorry this review is later than normal… I thought I’d scheduled it already to be posted two days ago. Opps. My bad!
