Captain America: White #1 (2015)

Publisher: Marvel

Writer: Jeph Loeb

Artist: Tim Sale

Release Date: September 2015

Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale have collaborated on several different projects. They have done multiple Batman books for DC Comics such as the hit Batman: The Long Halloween. They also did books for characters such as Superman and Catwoman. As for Marvel, Loeb and Sale have created their color series starring different Marvel superheroes. The Number One Archives is going to explore their most recent installment for their series, Captain America: White.

The issue begins with Captain America lying in bed unconscious. There are people watching him and talking about him being frozen in ice for years. Cap awakens in a panic–wondering where Bucky is at. The Avengers are the people surrounding him who try to subdue him. The Avengers inform him that he is no longer in the 1940s. Nick Fury arrives letting Cap know that Bucky Barnes, his friend in the war, is dead. Cap begins to remember an adventure he had with Bucky in December 1941 at the beginning of World War 2. Cap, along with Bucky, find Nick Fury and Dum Dum Dugan in a dire situation. Cap and Bucky save the pair from German gunfire. Nick Fury relays to Cap and Bucky that they will be working together. Cap, Bucky, Fury, and the Howling Commandos are all on a plane to the destination of the next mission. The plane gets shot at and it plummets to the ocean. The comic ends leaving the reader wondering if everyone is alright.

Key Positive/Negative Attributes:

-The book reads like a romance as Cap loves Bucky as if Bucky is his little brother or son.

-Seeing Cap interact with Fury is a pleasure. The two fighting over who will call the shots is humorous.

-Sale’s renderings makes the reader feel as if they are right in the middle of wartime during World War 2.

-Cameo from The Avengers is nice. Wish it lasted a little longer or I’d like to see Loeb/Sale do an Avengers book. Good to see Giant-Man and The Wasp be in the lineup.

-The suspenseful plane crash ending is a good way to want readers to buy issue 2.
