review 1: i have always enjoyed reading and studying about the westward expansion of the us. there have been numerous books written on the topic. this book is a very good overview of the events told through short biographies of several of the key players in the expansion from the east coast to the pacific. many of these individuals have had several books written about them and the events. lions of the west is an enjoyable read and does a very good job of tying the story together.
review 2: This book explains and describes the events that lead to the westward expansion of the United States. Each chapter considers one man who had a hand in this enterprise. This book was not as engaging as "Boone" (by the same author) but gave me a very good background of the events of th... moree time. If we think politics in the US is bad right now, Morgan explains a lot of what politicians, mostly in the 1800s, did to advance their agenda and to avoid the ever looming problem of slavery. less
