review 1: This slender book describes itself as a means for people who are interested in science, but realistically are not going back to a classroom to learn about physics using calculus. My purpose for reading was as a refresher, Physics 101 was a long time ago, and I probably missed some things the first time around anyway.The beginning to middle was all stuff I remembered and was a fast read, but some chapters in the middle to end were challenging and I wasn't patient enough to try to master. I probably would have gotten more out of if if I had done the exercises. I have a hard time believing someone without a STEM background could get the entire book without outside help. Nice as it seems, there probably isn't a shortcut to going to class.
review 2: I saw this on... more wsj. It seemed like a good idea to learn physics in a single book. I quickly ran into trouble with the Calculus. So I got a Calc book to refresh myself. Then I went back and it still didn't make sense. They do a poor job explaining their equations. I continued on but it was the same throughout the book. If you don't already know what they're teaching it's impossible. Even if you know it's hard to follow their equations. I suppose it shows why physics books are so big. It's not possible to shrink them down. They certainly didn't succeed. I give them a few points for trying. It did give me some motivation to learn this so I will continue with other books. less
