review 1: A Man of His Own was a fantastic read. At first I was attracted to read the book because I love books about extraordinary animals. However, it is much more than a book about the dog Pax, a German shepherd mix, who starts out as an a outcast, goes on to serve in WWII as a war dog, and eventually becomes a service dog to his owner helping Rick after he comes back from the war missing an arm and a broken spine. Another major character in the book is Keller Nicholson, the man who is Pax's trainer during the war. Nicholson comes from a difficult past and Pax is the best thing that has ever happened to him. When the war is over and Nicholson returns Pax to Rick and Francesca, he ends up agreeing to stay on as a live-in aide to both care for Rick and be with Pax. Unfortunat... moreely, Rick suffers not only from a broken body but also a broken spirit and the author has done a remarkable job in portraying Rick's struggles physically and emotionally. An intense relationship develops between Rick, Francesca, Nicholson and Pax as they live together. I won't go any further to in order to avoid spoiling the plot but it is a definitely a great book!
review 2: Interesting dynamics between a husband and wife as well as another man that comes into temporary ownership of an amazing dog, Pax, when he is volunteered into the Army's K-9 Corp. I enjoyed the first part of the book, when Pax was rescued by Rick, and their life together. Then the middle of the book was when Pax went into the K-9 Corp and met his trainer/caretaker Keller. The last 3rd of the book is where I lost a little interest, in the "human" characters but NEVER Pax! What an amazing creature! A heartwarming story that (for me) was saved by the devotion and love of Pax. less
