The comic book that I chose for today’s issue is kind of special to me in a numerous amounts of ways. I chose Usagi Yojimbo #154 to read and review for all of you from Artist/writer Stan Sakai and brought to us by Dark Horse Comics. The reasons I chose this and love this character is because one it was introduced to me courtesy of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the second reason being my love for Samurais and ninjas with a Yojimbo meaning bodyguard in Japanese. I also chose it because Stan Sakai is a throwback to the times when people wrote and did the art for their own books like Jack Kirby. In this issue, Usagi is trying to navigate his way in a storm when he discovers a ninja that is hurt and sick so he decides to nurse her back to health. He does that successfully and goes on his way. Months later, he accepts a job as a protector for a merchant who is going to meet with someone who could possibly strike a deal that could change the landscape, but who is he protecting the merchant from and will his generosity come back to bite him in this one part story entitled Kazehime Part 1. If you are into fancy drawings with watercolors like some issues out there in this world then this may not be the comic book for you. The drawings are very simplistic and drawn in a Japanese style while also being only in black and white too (just look to the picture to the left). While the artwork may not wow most of you, I can definitely appreciate it’s simplicity because the story is kind of amazing. I have always felt that every issue that I have ever read of Usagi Yojimbo, there is some kind of life lesson that is to be learned through his trials and tribulations. While I was searching for what the life lesson in this one was, I definitely found the story to be a little predictable. That might actually be the beauty of it, but I guarantee you are not going to see the ending coming either. Do not expect a Ninja Turtles style story to come out of this either because this is a serious dude who takes life very seriously. This is definitely one to check out if you’re looking for something else in your life. Check it out and check out my grades below:
