Chicken, Broccoli, Wheatberry Bowl

A couple of weeks ago I happened to be at Kroger and passed the Prep + Pared display. It’s been awhile, but I’m back with my Kroger meal kit updates. I had pretty much given up on Kroger coming out with anything new, and finally decided it was time to go with a delivery kit service. I started out with Blue Apron, but didn’t care for the meal selections or the way they organized the ingredients in the box. I cancelled and decided to try Hello Fresh. I’ve been happier with Hello Fresh, but there are weeks when I don’t care for any of the selections, so decided to add Plated. Plated is my favorite for the quantity of meal choices, but even they don’t always have enough selections to appeal to my picky 16-year-old, so I’ve kept both services. I have to stay ahead of the game to make sure I don’t end up with both kits arriving in the same week. So far that hasn’t happened.

I’ve been seeing reports recently about meal kit delivery services having trouble keeping customers. Investors are worried. This could be good news for Kroger. Personally, I prefer Kroger. I like the fact that I can just pick up a kit on my regular shopping trip. There’s no subscription that I must manage, no excess packaging to end up in the landfill, and they are slightly cheaper. My problem with Kroger, and the reason it’s been awhile since I’ve posted, is that they had the same meals for months. There was nothing new to talk about, and honestly I was bored…and disappointed. They are back with new meals, so I will be filling in between my delivered kits. Here is the review of my latest kit. Honey Mustard Chicken Bowl with Broccoli and Wheatberries.

Main Dish

This is a one dish meal or “bowl,” made up of diced chicken, broccoli, wheatberries, bacon and radishes. It’s one of the easiest Kroger meals I have made. First, you fry the bacon and set aside. Then you stirfry the diced chicken and broccoli stems.  Add the broccoli florets and radishes. Cook until tender. Add the wheatberries, honey and mustard. Serve in a bowl with bacon sprinkled on top. That’s it. Super simple.

Verdict

This was just an okay meal for me. The only flavor enhancers were Dijon mustard and honey. I’m not a big fan of this combination without some other seasonings to add interest. The mustard flavor was too strong. I believe there is room for tweaking using the main ingredients, while changing up the seasoning. The picky 16-year-old just got braces so she did not try it. I can say with certainty, however, that she would not have eaten this. Not sure if I will make this again.
