Contract Time

It’s Contract Time !

Rumblings out of THFC suggest that a raft of new contracts are in the offing, including Toby’s long-stalled renewal, plus extensions and raises for Kane, Dele, Eriksen and Son, with others possible too.

Toby’s a special case with his existing complex contract (involving an extension option that triggers a release clause). He’s also underpaid versus his market value by a considerable degree. Expect an extension, a hike to £100k + per week, no release clause and smiles all round (he’s conspicuous by his absence from the above ‘pic’ with Poch!).

Kane’s likely to ‘blow our current wage ceiling’ with rumours of £200k per week. There can be no argument he’d command even more than that elsewhere, perhaps as much as £350k or more, in Spain or Manchester. But I think £200k p.w. ‘solves the problem’.

However, it needs to be handled sensitively with the likes of Lloris, Vertonghen (our senior pros who will not want to be so far from our top earner). Dele needs to be tied down before the World Cup via yet another new contract. Both Eriksen and Son will be extended at £100k+ per week. Rose is the question mark. Stick or twist. And Lamela?

All this activity ties in with Posts that I made last Summer. Spurs finances are being transformed (mostly by the new stadium). Our wage bill is set to grow significantly in line with our income (see Post 60). Perhaps we can hope the “stingy Levy” narrative may finally be put to bed.

New signings-wise, I expect anything from 0-3 incomings, but at least 1 and maybe 2 of them (if made) would be loaned straight back ‘Alli style’ until the Summer. Lucas Moura of PSG is a very interesting possibility (an upgrade on the Nje and Nkoudou experiments) who could push for immediate First Team action. James Maddison from Norwich looks a real Poch-type player. Ryan Sessegnon would be great too. All silly money of course.

There’s gossip (“ITK”) that we can hope for a ‘Levy-surprise’ this window but who knows?

That’s why we’re Spurs fans. Our club is only predictable in its unpredictability !
