Two figures trudge across a snowy expanse.
About
In February 1959, a group of nine experienced hikers in the Russian Ural Mountains died mysteriously on an elevation known as Dead Mountain. Eerie aspects of the incident—unexplained violent injuries, signs that they cut open and fled the tent without proper clothing or shoes, a strange final photograph taken by one of the hikers, and elevated levels of radiation found on some of their clothes—have led to decades of speculation over what really happened.
Review
A group of young college students, carefree, best friends, looking forward to an exciting life embark on a hiking trip through the Ural mountains.
They all end up dead under strange circumstances and a legend is born. It’s a mystery that has occupied generations.
The lead investigator, Lev Ivanov, wrote in his final report that the hikers had died as a result of “an unknown compelling force,” a euphemism that, despite the best efforts of modern science and technological advances, still defines the case fifty-plus years later.
The author manages to paint a vivid portrait of the last tour these young people took and of their lives and characters. It is a tragic story because they died so very young and their families never got closure because they never knew what happened to them.
This didn’t stop them from mugging for the camera occasionally, and a fair portion of film was devoted to less serious documentation, including swapping hats and adopting exaggerated poses. A look at their album reveals typical college students clearly enjoying each other’s company.
The author is determined to find a scientific explanation for the deaths of these youths who lend themselves to speculation that reaches from they were killed by Soviet soldiers to aliens.
What happened to them, at least according to the book is almost as unbelievable as aliens: a deep sound drove them mad and confused, they ran from the sound and froze to death.
Conclusion
A real-life mysterious tragedy with a weird twist.
