When I was a kid, OP wasn’t a thing. There was either ‘this boss is nuts’ or ‘this shit is waaaay too easy’. Nowadays, everything is OP. Even fucking Aquaman is OP.
Everybody cries about this or that being OP, but everybody forgets that being OP is as fun snorting coke off a loved one’s tits. I play games to feel like a fucking badass, I want to rain hurt on you from a thousand miles away, I want to set your skeleton on fire with a fucking wish, a twitch of my eye. I want to be the Optimus Prime of OP. I want the best lovers and the best guns and I hunt for them. I want to be OP, we all do and yet so many people complain about it.
The problem with OP only ever really arises in PvP, never in PvE. I know because finished X-Men Legends in about four and a half hours and I laughed my tits off every second of the way, but back in Destiny yr1, if I heard someone popping off a Mythoclast, I’d just leave, he didn’t even have to kill me with it, I just had to hear it, and I’d quit the game. Now that’s OP.
The thing is though, the thing everyone knows and no one says, is that not only is there nothing wrong with OPness, we all play games to be OP, but there’s a problem when someone else is OP.
We’ve all played Saint’s Row 3, yeah? Of course we have, it’s a hell of a game, because you’re OP. Come on, falling out of the sky with two fists full of electric death is about as fun as it gets and you know it, but being a level one pilot against a full commander just after his Titanfall is no fun at all.
The problem with being OP is that you come to rely on your badassery and not on your skill and this brings me to Dark Souls.
We all know that the Souls games are ovary chewing, testicle stomping motherfuckers. Until you learn that rhythm, you will die. You will die over and over and over again, no matter what you’re wearing or wielding, until you become one with its awful delights, you will die. When you do get it though, when you do get that timing down, you start to streamline yourself. The Fat-Roll is the first to go, then the heavy armour and the huge weapons, all sacrificed for speed, movement and mechanics.
For me, that’s when the balance of being OP and the game being OP get it right. When the most OP you can get is being naked and never being touched, when the sight of you joining a game wearing a nappy and carrying nothing more dangerous than you’re swagger and people shit themselves, then that is a game I want to be OP in.
