review 1: An enjoyable, although somewhat convoluted, speculative story about the early demise of Jane Austen, based on true facts. I found the many Austen men and women and their wives and husbands, dead wives and husbands, and children (legitimate and otherwise) to be confusing, so the story did not flow as well as it might have. In her notes, the author details the various historical sources which she researched, but one is left wondering how much of the book is factual and how much is fictitious.
review 2: I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this story. We know little about Jane' s private life, due to Cass burning pretty much all her letters, but this story takes the facts in an interesting direction. As a "what if" story, not bad at all. Don't read it as gospel
... more, that's not the intention. Take it as it is, an offering from a mystery point of view...facts fitting a motive for murder in a time when reputation meant something. less

A gentle but unfortunately rather dull story imagining the events leading up to Jane Austen's death.
