review 1: I've been reading a lot of more serious short fiction lately, so I was really in the mood for this for a change. Previous anthologies edited by this pair have been very good and full of a great mix of stories. But these all pretty much blended together and just weren't as fun and charming as they should have been. It was only stubbornness and a lazy sense of momentum that made me bother to finish the book. The only stories that were really good were Seanan McGuire's and Scott Sigler's. Even some favorite authors' stories were just OK. It was just a really mediocre book.
review 2: The usual mix of good and ok that I expect from a short story compilation. Couple of ones I really enjoyed (nice to read about Antimony Price in Seanan McGuire's story), but even those... more ranked at about 4 stars for me and were outweighed by the ones which were ok, 3-star ratings. The blessing and the curse of this format is that they're too short to usually be terrible, but it also has to be pretty amazing to rank higher than 4-stars. While I was reading because of McGuire, Sanderson, etc., it was nice to get introduced to some new-to-me authors. less
