Miracle on 5th Avenue is the third book in Sarah Morgan’s feel good From Manhattan With Love series. This series is all told in the first person about three best friends Paige, Frankie and Eva who are also business partners. They own an events and concierge company called Urban Genie. The first book is Sleepless in Manhattan which is Paige’s story and the second is Frankie’s story, Sunset in Central Park. Miracle on 5th Avenue is Paige’s tale. It may be the third but it still works as a stand alone novel as Sarah thoughtfully interweaves the back story. The next three are New York, Actually, Holiday in the Hamptons and lastly, Moonlight Over Manhattan.
From the moment that I saw the front cover, I knew that Miracle on 5th Avenue would be an unashamedly romantic account of Eva’s journey to finding true love. The illustration is of people ice skating at night in Central Park, the lights of New York city buildings and the many trees twinkling with lights. True to character, Eva is looking on from a distance. Romance is not the only theme though. Grief is a huge part of the story arc for the two leads, Eva and Lucas. They both deal with it in very different ways as every person reacts differently to death. A smaller theme that is gently and thoughtfully dealt with is the Christmas is often a difficult time of year for many and may lead to thoughts of suicide.
‘Be the sunshine, not the rain’, is the perfect description of Eva. She is a glass half full person, seeing the best in everyone and in every situation. I think this is wonderful because she is portrayed to be physically similar to Marilyn Monroe. With men who are only interested in her body, Eva has acquired the perfect comebacks to put these men in their place. She could have easily been a dumb blonde character but she is very smart. Sarah has made her even more fascinating woman by hinting that she is an empath.
Eva finds herself in the fortunate situation of being able to live in a penthouse for a few days. Urban Genie has been hired by the famous crime author, Lucas Blade’s, grandmother, to make his penthouse ready for Christmas as he is meant to be writing in Vermont. This involves house sitting for a few days. Unknown to Lucas’s family though, he is holed up in the penthouse, suffering from major writer’s block. From the moment that Eva arrives to find Lucas hiding in the penthouse sparks immediately fly. It’s definitely a case of opposites attract! Lucas initially came across as a glass half empty man who is spiky and distrustful of those around him. Initially, Eva believes that being a crime writer has given him a disjointed view of the world around him. Over a short period of time, Eva discovers that it’s not that simple and that there is more to him than meets the eye.
