review 1: I enjoyed this book but found it a bit confusing at times. Jumping from one set of characters to another I sometime had to stop and remind myself who was who. I had not read the previous book using this detective but found I did not need too as he is explained enough in this one so that was not an issue. The sex angle was a bit explicit and we had no prior warning that it would be. On the whole I enjoyed the character of Spero Lucas and look forward to further books.
review 2: Major disappointment. All the details I loved about the previous Spero Lucas novel, The Cut, were so flat in this installment. There was a lot abut DC streets and neighborhoods but it read more like GPS than sense of place. My appetite and fashion sense were totally unstimulated by t... morehe meager descriptions, and the graphic sex scenes? So unlike the genre. The plot(s) were perfunctory, poorly paced, and boring, the characters thin. It seems that Spero is depressed in this volume. I hope he and Pelecanos get better. less
