review 1: I loved the idea of two interwoven love stories traced throughout time, but the idea, unfortunately, was not well executed. While I love good prose, the hundreds of extremely detailed pages about the arctic exploration included very little action - it seemed as though most of the book was backstory. I kept anticipating a turn from passive description to dynamic action but was left nonplussed. And neither love story was very fulfilling, least of all the present day romance which was more a story of chronic ennui and low-grade depression. All in all, as much as I wanted to love this book (and believe me, I did want to!) it was an epic disappointment.

... moreanddaughter learns family secrets of her Victorian ancestors while living in family home one hundred years later. Taking place in one day and shifting between the weather extremes of polar exploration and a hot summer day outside of London, the arctic story is beautifully imagined; the contemporary couple's story seemed a bit forced. Won the John Llewellyn Rhys prize. less
