“Oh, I don’t think they want to hear about my minute troubles,” Hummer’s thoughts concluded.
She was just about to divulge it. But stopped. Abruptly.
“It’s a lot to me; but not to them. And I could never spill the details out in such a way that the pain would be understood.”
So Hummer kept the pain to herself. But the pursisting ache billowed within her heart until she thought she might explode Then, she was reminded.
“Like an angel choir singing deep within me…Love Lifted Me!”
Well, not all those verses were in her ‘angel choir’ recall, but some were. “Must have been the ones I needed!”
Hummer’s ‘angry waves’ were more than she could handle. Unexplainable to even a dearest friend.
“And certainly not consolable to those who could care less!”
But there was One who did care. There was One who did understand. There was One who consoled perfectly. “And that was Jesus!”
So Hummer pulled out the hymnal from a nearby bookstash. Using the index, she found the partially remembered hymn.
After reading the words, the simple melody began to play in her head!
She hummed silently. And before long she felt compelled to pull out the dusty, unemployed guitar.
“Humm…still in tune.”
She plucked a few chords. She sang the first verse. And then the second. And the third. With the refrain repeated in between.
In the quietness of her own…quiet place!
Not for church rehearsal. Not for anyone else to hear. But for herself.
And she was blessed. She was relieved of her pain. And Peace took its place.
“Love has truly lifted me!” Hummer was refreshed!
“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord…” (Ephesians 5:19)
“Why didn’t I do this sooner?!”
She was busy. She was enjoying a pity-party. She was lathargically lacking faith. Just as had happened many times before. But the Lover of Her Soul waited patiently for her invitation for comfort from Him.
“I will remember next time!”
Maybe Hummer will. Maybe Hummer won’t. But Jesus will be there. Waiting. He knows her human frame.
Hummingly…
If I had a regular time of, ‘singing and making melody in my heart to the LORD,’ I would be quite a regular overcomer!
I would be regularly refreshed!
The more I hum along with my guitar – even sing without Tim! – the more I will overcome whatever wants to discourage me. For He is there waiting. He will bring just what I need: Comfort. Encouragement. Himself.
For Jesus inhabits praise.
Hummingly in His Love,
