Hwaji is a household name, if not a legend, an icon for a fact. Both of his albums “EAT” (2014) and “ZISSOU” (2016) were awarded as the best hiphop albums of the year from the prestigious Korean Music Awards. What Hwaji offers to listeners is a solid foundation on hiphop beats, experimental 90’s hiphop to be exact, and a sincere lyricism that dwells on majestic poetry and flow.
After 2 years, the rapper is back with new material, the EP “WASD”. Tagged as an EP for consisting of 7 tracks, Hwaji says that this EP is something new and is different compare dto his first collection of works.
“WASD” implies the letters on a keyboard, a usual alternative to the arrow keys used during an online game, thus giving off a message of going through music like the first time you tried playing.
The title song “Nappe” came out with a music video today directed by Cocky. The song gives the whole EP’s message, concentrating on his complex feelings towards the scene and being part of it.
The track “WASD” is made up of English lyrics (and is not pretty hard to understand). “Shine My Way” was a track featuring Chaboom and Justhis that was released last year. Overall, the EP promotes to have fun while living and doing what you do.
Tracklist:
1. 나 빼
2. Shine My Way (feat. Chaboom & JUSTHIS)
3. WASD
4. 게임 하지마
5. On It
6. Surf
7. 모태히피 (feat. O’nut)
We are loving the EP (as we did with the two earlier ones). Time will tell if we’re going to see it receive new and more recognition, something that it well deserves.
In other news, to celebrate the release of his new EP, Hwaji will be holding a concert on January 19th at the Hanatour V Hall. Tickets are already available online.
