Il limbo

“I dannati della terra non scelgono di estinguersi. Scelgono al contrario di moltiplicarsi: è la vita la loro unica arma contro la vita, la vita è tutto quello che hanno”. (Congo Square, fandango editore).
James Baldwin, scrittore americano del 1900, ha dovuto occuparsi di razzismo. Faceva parte dei segregati in partenza per colore di pelle. La frase che ho riportato segnala una contraddizione: le miserie, le povertà producono le nascite, mentre gli agi le riducono.
Gli alloggi a pianoterra di Napoli, i bassi composti da una sola stanza, brulicavano di bambini.
Senza nessuna intimità possibile, i genitori avviavano nuove gravidanze in mezzo alla famiglia. Era la loro forza, la loro ricchezza biologica. Anche se decimata da ogni specie di mancanza, era necessario essere numerosi.
Gli agiati lo sentono superfluo. Il privilegio per sua natura tende all’esclusiva, anziché alla condivisione.
Baldwin si affrancò dalla sua condizione con la scrittura. È un buon rivestimento, una seconda pelle che rende accettabile la prima e la nobilita perfino.
Esperto di razzismo, ha saputo che non è un sentimento spontaneo ne’ individuale. Ha bisogno di certe comodità per manifestarsi: di un clima favorevole, di sentirsi forte, di un’autorizzazione dall’alto. Accertatosi che l’andazzo è propizio, allora si esibisce. Perché il razzismo è un’esibizione di superiorità.
L’accanimento si rivolge ai poveri della categoria detestata. I ricchi della medesima sono graditi.
Gli emigrati arabi sono rigettati, gli Emirati Arabi sono riveriti. Il razzismo si rivolge ai deboli, senza diritti, senza tutele. È necessariamente vigliacco. Ha bisogno di isolare il suo nemico.
Il provvisorio presidente Americano intende gettare nell’illegalità e nell’espulsione ottocentomila persone regolarizzate dalla precedente amministrazione. Da noi fa il paio con il rifiuto di cittadinanza per chi nasce in Italia da genitori stranieri. Anche se persona interamente italiana di fatto per lingua, vita, studi, le è negato il diritto. Abitano Il limbo, che è l’anticamera dell’Inferno nella Cantica di Dante. Di recente il limbo è l’anticamera del campo di concentramento.
Isolare è la premessa necessaria per aggredire con agio e impunità.
Nella generale riduzione di nascite tra gli agiati, rientrano anche i razzisti. Anche la razza dei razzisti è destinata a estinguersi.

“The wretched of the earth do not decide to become extinct, they resolve, on the contrary, to multiply: life is their only weapon against life, life is all that they have.” (The devil finds work, The Dial Press, 1976). James Balwin, a 20th century American writer, had to deal with racism. He was himself segregated for the colour of his skin. The quote found here underlines a contradiction: the wretched, the poverty-stricken multiply, while the wealthy decrease.
The ground floor flats in Naples, the one room ‘bassi’, overflowed with children.
There was no possible intimacy there; parents conceived new generations before their families. It was their strength, their biological wealth. Even if decimated by every possible type of want, it was important to be numerous. This is superfluous for the well-to-do. Privilege, by nature, tends towards exclusivity rather than division.
Baldwin freed himself of his condition through his writing. It is a fine shell, a second skin that not only makes the first acceptable, but exalts it even.
An expert in racism, he knew it was neither a spontaneous emotion nor an individual one. It is in need of certain amenities to manifest itself: a favourable climate, a feeling of strength, and endorsement from above. Once it has made certain that the situation is favourable, it then shows itself. Because racism is a show of superiority. Discrimination is aimed at the poor members of the despised category. The rich members are welcome.
Arab immigrants are rejected, the United Arab Emirates are revered. Racism targets the weak, those with no rights, with no protection. It is manifestly coward. It needs to isolate its enemy.
The standing president of the United States intends to make eight hundred thousand people, regularized by past administrations, illegal, and then throw them out of the country. It is in line with our refusing to give citizenship to children born in Italy to foreign parents. Even if they are totally Italian. in the language they speak, the life they lead, and the studies they carry out, they are denied that right. We live in Limbo, the anti-chamber to Dante’s hell. In recent times, this limbo is the anti-chamber of concentration camps.
Isolation is the key to attacking easily and without the risk of punishment.
The overall decrease in the number of births among the upper classes includes racists. The race of racists is, too, destined to become extinct.
