After posting our 2017 reflections in our top 25 over the past few weeks the time has come to look forward again. Here’s our January 2018 gig preview post.
First up is a band who were in the top five of our end of year list. Fresh from supporting Fujiya & Miyagi on their UK tour in December, grasshopper are headlining their own gig at the Green Door Store on 3rd January, supported by Red Deer People and Olm.
Talking of the Green Door Store, they’re holding their 7th Birthday Bash on Saturday 6th January. There’s a couple of Brighton bands on the bill (Desire and Guru), but the whole night looks great to us with Crows, Hotel Lux, Madonnatron and Lice also playing.
Wednesday 10th January is the first of new night at Sticky Mike’s called Support Your Local Girl Gang. It’s been started by Rixson Music after reading a report in the Guardian which said that 69% of gig sin the UK were made up of only male musicians. The first night features Strange Girl, MOMAC, IBI, and Ann Leigh Stainton. If you can’t make it, then the next Support Your Local Girl Gang will be on 14th February.
On the Friday of that week (12th January), Acid Box Promotions put on their first gig of the year at the Hope & Ruin – Projector are headlining and support comes from Strange Cages, Gaygirl and Sit Down.
The following week see’s two of Brighton’s biggest rising stars playing headline shows – Yonaka play at the Green Door Store on Wednesday 17th January, and then on Friday night (19th January) Tigercub play the Concorde 2 supported by Our Girl, Glum and Sick Joy.
Then, in the last week of January Love Thy Neighbour hold their second Triptych mini-festival at the Hope & Ruin. The concept is the same as last year – three bands on three nights, showcasing family and friends of the label – some bands who’ve released music on Love Thy Neighbour and others hand picked by label boss Andy Rossiter. Additionally, each night also has a very limited lathe cut vinyl release featuring the three bands playing. Triptych 1 on Thursday 25th January features The Hundredth Anniversary, Penelope Isles and Prince Vaseline, Triptych 2 on Friday 26th January sees Dark Horses, Projector and Circe playing, and Triptych 3 on Saturday 27th January finishes up the festival with Jungfrau, Speak Galactic and T House.
