review 1: Another fun time-travel adventure in another alternate time-line where Burton hasn't met Swinburne yet and competing men from the future are trying to manipulate events to their advantage. The titular Abdu El Yezdi had been secretly guiding British technological advances and foreign policy since Queen Victoria was assassinated. Spring-Heeled Jack still messes things up, but Burton and his allies are deputized by the King to protect the Empire. Another fun spin through mid-Victorian times with the ever-capable Burton, the insightful poet Swinburne and their Cannibal Club friends.
review 2: Captain Richard Francis Burton has a triumphant return from his expedition to The Mountains of the Moon and his discovery of the source of the Nile. He is knighted by King
... moreAlfred, who assumed the throne after the assassination of Queen Victoria in 1840. This assassination bifurcates history and multiple timelines now exist. Aleister Crowley believes he is the Superman that evolution will create one day but he wants it now, so he enlists the great brains of the day to help him. Mediums, vampires, alternate history, it's all a cracking good fantasy read. less
