June (2017) Reads

I enjoy reading for leisure. This month, I will be indulged in these two texts for the month of June:

Gods at War: Defeating the Idols that Battle for your Heart by Kyle Idleman

“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” -Joshua 24:15-

In this text, Idleman brings the dangers of idolatry to the surface. He illustrates the human heart as a battlefield where the false gods of the world compete for number one priority in our lives. From food, sex, and entertainment to money, success, and family, Idleman provides enlightenment on how these gifts from God can be twisted into a lure, pull us away from him, and be worshiped as our personal gods. Experience a spiritual reality check with this text; a must-read for every believer.

God Sleeps in Rwanda by Joseph Sebarenzi God sleeps in Rwanda is a personal narrative on the account of Joseph Sebarenzi.

He shares his experience growing up among the political uprising in Rwanda that led to mass genocide and the assassination of over 800,000 Tutsi Rwandans by the dominant Hutu in 1994; his family among them. Sebarenzi shares stories from being a carefree child playing soccer with his Tutsi and Hutu friends to bone-chilling events of hideouts from the Hutu mob. Still an adolescent, Joseph’s family sent him away to Congo for the opportunity of a quality education. Upon his return to Rwanda, now with a wife and child, everything appeared to be at peace. However, rumors of a Tutsi uprising against the Hutu, and a web of lies involving Sebarenzi’s good name led to an attempt on his life that resulted is daring escape. Despite  Sebarenzi’s experience, he’s kept his faith in God and live a life of love, compassion, and free of inflicting the hatred bestowed upon him. God Sleeps in Rwanda is thus-far a heartfelt, lyrical piece of literature and personal testimony-a recommendation for everyone.
