In this week’s The Scottish Prisoner read-a-long installment, “Justice by Sword and Betrayal,” Jamie Fraser is compelled to tell Hal and Lord John about the uprising in the planning. It’s a painful act against those he cares for and a cause he could believe in. He without a doubt knows this uprising, like Culloden, is doomed to fail. He acts to protect the Jacobites from bloodshed and heavier costs.  Jamie is devastated to his core. Arrests will be made. Trials for treason will be had. Lord John and Hal reach an understanding of what this action costs Jamie.

The question of the duel arises. Hal forbids Jamie from dueling Twelvetrees. Jamie storms out, refusing to listen to Hal. Why shouldn’t he fight the man? As Hal and Lord John discuss the matter, we find the many complications with Jamie being a paroled traitor. John’s reputation could be ruined and Jamie could go to jail for life if he killed the other man. There’s no way to stop him except for what Lord John has up his sleeve or rather in his waistcoat pocket. He drops the bomb on Hal that he challenged Twelvetrees to a duel the following morning at Lambeth Palace with sabers. The note in John’s pocket was Twelvetrees acceptance. Hal was dumbfounded. Would Jamie be angry at this alteration to his plan?

The duel takes place the next morning as scheduled. Jamie shows up as John’s second, instead of the expected Colonel Harry Quarry. Twelvetrees has Captain Honey as his back-up and the body snatching surgeon, Dr. Hunter on his team. John is seriously wounded in the chest and thigh. Twelvetrees is likely mortally wounded, but still alive when Jamie takes John home from the field.
