Latin American/Caribbean women vying for Miss Universe crown

[Caveat: Yes. Personally, I am as opposed to beauty pageants as I am to boxing, but it is Sunday . . . please do not judge. Furthermore, we must remember that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was forced to sell the Miss Universe Organization in 2015 after his incendiary comments about Mexicans drove away broadcasters NBC and Univision. Sadly, as Rolling Stone magazine reports, he owned the pageant for nearly two decades, during which time he would have had the opportunity to come into contact with nearly 4,000 beauty queens.]

Dominican Today recently reported that Miss Dominican Republic Carmen Muñoz, from San Francisco de Macorís in the province of Duarte, ranks among the top 20 favorite candidates to win the Miss Universe 2017 contest, based on the listas.20minutos.es website.

The last time I looked it up on the site, the top five (starting with 1st place) were Colombia’s Laura González Ospina; Puerto Rico’s Danyeshka “Danna” Hernández Valentín; Mexico’s Denisse Iridiane Franco Piña; Nicaragua’s Berenice Suyami Quezada Herrer; and Venezuela’s Keysi Mairín Sayago Arrechedera. Other interesting candidates that rank among the top 20 are France’s Alicia Aylies Belfroy, from French Guiana, and Curaçao’s Nashaira Belisa Balentien.
