LGBT ICONS CELEBRATED AT GLITZY GLASGOW AWARDS NIGHT

Fashion guru Gok Wan and model Caprice party with Scotland’s Icon Award winners!

The TIE Campaign were recognised for their work on inclusive education at a ceremony in Glasgow last night, scooping Charity of the Year as well as Role Model of the Year for co-founder, Jordan Daly.

And former Scottish Labour leader, Kezia Dugdale, took the coveted Politician of the Year award. The Lothians MSP was cheered-on by her partner, Jenny Gilruth, the SNP MSP for Glenrothes, one of the first public occasions the pair have been seen at together.

Jordan Daly of the TIE Campaign told us:

“It’s lovely to be recognised for the work that we do and we would like to thank everyone who nominated us in both of the categories that we won. These awards are dedicated to all of the LGBTI young people out there – who are the true icons themselves. Our work will continue until we live in a society where no young person feels isolated or excluded because of who they are.”

There was also a posthumous ICON Award for MND campaigner, Gordon Aikman, whose husband Joe Pike accepted the award to a standing ovation from the room. Gordon died earlier this year, aged just 31, after raising more than £500,000 for research into motor neurone disease.

The glitzy ceremony, sponsored by Tesco, was held at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow and included performances from Britain’s Got Talent star, Ronan Parke, local vocalist Peter McKenna Boyd, the Feeva singers and Stepz tribute act. Some big names were there to enjoy the £100-a-ticket event too, with STV weatherman Sean Batty, TV presenter Jean Johansson and BBC Queer Britain’s Riyadh Khalaf.

This is the 3rd annual Icon Awards ceremony, with each being held in Glasgow and the west-coast influence doesn’t just stop with the venue.  More than half of the seven judges live or work in the West, and 65% of this years winners came from Glasgow & the West. Infact, since Icon launched in 2015, nearly two-thirds of its awards have gone to individuals or groups who either live or are based in the city or West of Scotland.

Icon winners for 2017 were shortlisted from over 60,000 nominations by a panel of judges including prominent human rights lawyer, Aamer Anwar, trans activist and former Icon Awards winner Jennie Robertson and SFA Diversity Manager, Hala Ousta. There is no public vote for finalists, with those shortlisted instead asked to explain to the judges why they should win in their nominated category for some awards.

The Icon Awards are now managed by a new Scottish charity, Big Impact (SC047642), with the promise that all proceeds from the event will be donated to charity.  Previous charity beneficiaries include Waverley Care who raised over £8,500 in 2015 and Beatson Cancer Charity who raised over £14,000 in 2016.
