Why do we lie? That is a simple question but it takes a dangerous turn when the one being lied to is ourselves.
In modern society, it seems that telling the truth’s frowned upon in fear of the shame that the truth will bring. That perplexes my mind when all my life I heard the old phrase that “the truth will set you free”. I recently asked a longtime friend of mine who’s known to fabricate the truth. I asked what their reason for not being more truthful was. They said something that stuck with me like the taste of spoiled milk. They said the reason that most people themselves-included lie is that they’re ashamed of what the truth would reveal about them.
I thought to myself how conflicting is that. Shame and truth residing in the same house.I admit shame and truth are neighbors at best. But this time they are roommates each fighting for the position of the kitchen i.e. your mind. Have we become so haughty and fearful of our truth be it good or bad? That seen as untrustworthy is far better a result? There must be some point where freedom of mind is worth more than our pride and public perception. I’d like to think that we all want to be free and find freedom of mind to be a vital necessity.
Okay, let’s argue that fear of shame is the only reason people lie. So, then if shame is so worrisome why do anything to be shameful of?Shame at its core is rooted in pleasure. You know we’ll risk it for the biscuit. That saying is true sort of. It should say risk it in hopes of getting the biscuit. Because we know that the majority of risk seldom come with the expected reward. Yet time and time again we strive toward the reward and ignore the voice of truth screaming at us to weigh the cost. That has to do with pleasure being the driving force and shame being the passenger.
So, what is our fix for a pleasure driven world where truth is lost and shame takes no prisoners? We must weigh the cost of admission. Is the price worth the reward if so walk in it? Then it becomes your truth and you must embrace it for all that its worth. Once you’re walking in it no person then can ever hold you captive again. Through learning to live our truths freedom can ring. No one should have to put you on the stand to get the truth. Live life boldly and in a truth, that you can own and break the tie that binds.
