review 1: The novel begins around the time of the transition from Dutch to US Virgin Islands and ends around the Korean War. It (primarily) follows the women of a family and how the political changes in their islands impact their lives. The writing, with shifting narrators, is compelling, making this a book I didn't want to put down. Each person's voice is steady and earnest to her own story. The use of words, phrases and syntax specific to the islands takes the reader there. The book provides context to the lives of folks from the US Virgin Islands.
review 2: Family saga, magical realism, historical fiction set in the Caribbean. Terrific storytelling, but at certain points I was exhausted with the goings on with this family. Still, a fabulous debut novel that I enjoyed
... morevery much. Some of you will like the fable-like quality and it might drive others crazy because there is ALOT of it. And that was fine by me. The historical aspect of LoLaD was interesting, enlightening and informative. 4- 41/2 stars. Great for book clubs. less

Heavy and a bit overrated. Reminded me of the stories my mom would tell, though.
