Lighthouse Bay 5 (Pages 140 – 176)

SPOILERS!!!

Matthew Seaward breaks his promise to Isabella for good reasons. He remembers that once he burnt a letter sent to his wife by her mother because his wife, Clara, had asked him to. Yet, later Clara regretted it. So having this memory in mind, Matthew thinks that he will hide the chest in some place where Isabella could retrieve it in the future. His resolution strengthens when he sees what there is in the chest. So instead of dropping the chest in the sea, he buries it in the forest, but he doesn’t tell Isabella.

Isabella starts working for the Fullbrights. Their little boy, Xavier, is three, and to her shock she discovers that Xavier was born on the same day as Daniel, her own son, was. Xavier is deemed difficult, and later Isabella discovers that the problem is that the boy doesn’t talk even though he understands everything. This is not the only problem in the household. At night she hears Katarina and Ernst Fullbright shouting and arguing, and the first time she goes to comfort Katarina, feeling empathy as she had gone through the same. Katarina tells her that Ernst has this idea that she has a lover, so she is afraid that he will try to hurt her. After this heart-to-heart conversation, the next day Katarina lets Isabella know that the conversation didn’t happen, so Isabella knows what her place is.

In the lighthouse Matthew gets a telegram asking about the barque, Aurora, where Isabella was travelling. Matthew learns about the precious mace from a friend, and he fears he is in trouble. When Isabella comes to the lighthouse to send a telegram to her sister, she confesses that her husband is dead, but she is afraid of her in-laws. So Matthew promises that her secret is safe with him. He still doesn’t tell her about burying the mace. In this encounter something happens to Isabella; she realises that she is attracted to Matthew and desires him. She feels ashamed and embarrassed, fearing that her desire might be evident to Matthew, and she knows he can’t feel the same. So she takes her leave, hoping to receive news from her sister soon.

I love the parts about the past. The story between Matthew and Isabella is sweet. I hope that they get together because Matthew is a decent man and could be good for Isabella. We know that Percy Winterbourne eventually goes to Australia. I hope that he doesn’t see Isabella. And what about the mace? Is it still buried where Matthew buried it in 2011?
