Mad As A Hatter
by Michael Romani
Some people spend a lifetime
Without ever really visiting the world
I think this to be very nearly a crime
And raise against this with flag unfurled
Ready to do the impossible before breakfast
And determined to strive for things that will last
A blue morpho flitters and flutters by
Beckoning me to come and follow
As I do in my best sort of a reply
On and on with this magic show
Determined to reach substance in ferocity
I will always follow my curiosity
All becomes clear with the fullness of time
Marching steps through many a varied clime
The question raises above the clatter
How to fight off darkness with smiles and laughter
Things like this can certainly change the self
Even if only visited through books on a shelf
A daughter raises her Cheshire smile
I've held her hand through many a mile
And while she dreams of the future, I dream each night
Only hoping for my chance to make her world right
While she smiles up at me, I hold her tight
Only hoping to fight off the darkness with her light
